A trip to Bangkok wouldn’t be complete without cruising along the Chao Phraya River. Visiting Bangkok in the middle of protests brought about by political instability in Thailand in 2013 deprived me of the opportunity to visit the iconic river. Suffice to say I’m planning another trip in the soonest possible time. But this time, with a slight variation from what would have been my insight towards the trip two years ago.
A video posted by Benjamin Parrot about a Thai boat lady has garnered more than a Vimeo recognition, it has touched the hearts of many. The video features Bangkok boat lady Samruay Imkrajai narrating how driving her boat and living in a boat house with her daughter for over 20 years have been her life.
According to Samruay, she prefers the river over the traffic-swamped streets of Bangkok because she feels “closer to nature.” Her husband had passed away and she has continued her life on the river with her daughter. Samruay has nothing but genuine love for the lifestyle she and her daughter have.
Perhaps this documentary will make us look more closely into life than merely visiting top tourist destinations. Traveling should be fun, carefree and entertaining, however, it can also be life-changing and inspiring.
