Hostels are a popular budget accommodation option, and not just for backpackers. While sometimes called Youth Hostels, most hostels welcome guests of all ages.
Hostels are a great way to meet people while you are on the road, especially if you are travelling by yourself. Many hostels also offer private rooms, so you can have the privacy of a hotel with the social benefits of a hostel.
Booking Hostels Online
There are two major hostel bookers which dominate the hostel booking market: HostelWorld and HostelBookers.
HostelWorld
HostelWorld is the oldest of the two sites, and has the largest database of hostels available. With HostelWorld there is a $2 booking fee, with an option to buy a Gold Card for US$10.00 and pay no fees for 12 months.

HostelBookers
Hostelbookers is the next biggest hostel booking sites. Not quite as many hostels listed but they have become popular as they don’t charge a booking fee.
According to their site they are 8.7% cheaper than their closest competitor (*HostelWorld*). They also have a lowest price guarantee, so if you find a property listed on HostelBookers.com cheaper elsewhere online (for the same travel dates and booking conditions) they will refund double the difference.

Hostelling International Hostels
Most independent hostels can can found on HostelWorld/HostelBookers. These booking sites are so popular now that it is essential for a hostel to be listed. These booking site do not list Hostelling International hostels (HI).
HI, previously known as International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF), is made up of over 90 national youth hostel associations representing over 4,500 hostels worldwide. YHA hostels in Australia, New Zealand and the UK are also part of the HI group.
HI hostels are run not for profit, and a HI membership card is usually required. If you do not have one you can buy one at the hostel, or you will pay a couple of dollars more on top of the usual rate.
